Awards
It is envisaged that Awards will be made at SAS-2009 in the following categories:
- Lifetime Achievement in SAS (the 'Andre Guinier Award')
- Excellence in SAS Technical/Instrumental Development
- Excellence in the Theoretical Development of SAS
- Excellence in the Application of SAS
- Excellence in the Communication of SAS Science
- Best Posters (4 categories)
Where possible, awards will be presented at the Conference Banquet. The photographs and names of winners will appear on this website, in the Conference Proceedings, and in post-Conference reports.
Award Criteria
Lifetime Achievement: This award befits those who have made a sustained and recognised contribution to the development or application of Small-Angle Scattering. The recipient will normally be in the later years of their career. Recent winners include Prof. Heinrich Stuhrmann (2006) and Dr Michael Agamalian (2002). This award will be decided by a jury comprising: 3 representatives from the IUCr Commission on Small-Angle Scattering, the 2 Chairs (Life & Physical Sciences) of the SAS-2009 Scientific Programme Committee, and the Chair of the SAS-2009 International Advisory Committee.
Technical/Instrumental Development, Theoretical Development, Application: These awards befit individuals in the earlier stages of their careers (as a guide, within 8 years of completion of their doctoral studies) who are making valuable contributions to the development or application of Small-Angle Scattering. The awards will be decided by the SAS-2009 Scientific Programme Committee.
Communication: SAS-2009 will make this new award in recognition of the increasingly important role that the effective communication of science plays in modern society. The award is only open to those who give presentations at the Conference. No nominations are necessary. The award will be decided with the assistance of Conference delegates!
Poster: Prizes will be awarded in the areas of Technical/Instrumental Development, Theoretical Development, Application in Life Sciences, Application in Physical Sciences. The prizes will be decided by judges appointed from amongst the Conference delegates by the SAS-2009 Local Organising Committee.
Nomination Process
A written nomination is required for the following awards:
- Lifetime Achievement in SAS (the 'Andre Guinier Award')
- Excellence in SAS Technical/Instrumental Development
- Excellence in the Theoretical Development of SAS
- Excellence in the Application of SAS
This nomination, which should not exceed one (A4 size) side of paper when printed, should include:
- an indication of the award for which the nominee is being proposed!
- the full title and name of the nominee
- a short biography of the nominee
- a clear statement of why the nominee meets the award criteria
- the full references to no more than 3 papers/reports supporting the nomination (those nominating individuals should be prepared to supply electronic copies of these if requested)
- the names and contact details of 2 referees who can attest to the nomination (these will normally be from different institutions)
Self-nomination is permitted.
Completed nominations should be emailed as PDF attachments to SAS2009@diamond.ac.uk to arrive no later than midnight BST on May 30, 2009.
